Love Rosie Interview Series - Kirsty Mckenzie
For our readers, can you please give some insight as to who you are and what you do?
My name is Kirsty. I’m mum to three little girls, wife to Nathan, and these days I would call myself a writer, blogger and I’m working on a few little projects, which might see me adding ‘author’ to that list very soon!
What is your favourite part of being a mum?
It sounds super corny, but it’s the love! The feeling you get when they hug you, and you know that you’re their world. Also, watching them grow and learn, that never gets old. I love watching my big girl learning new things at school, just as much as I love watching my little one learning her first words, and taking her first steps.
What is the best parenting advice you’ve recieved?
The best advice I ever received is “If it’s not a problem for you, it’s not a problem” and something my dad calls the “Aeroplane Analogy”. Basically, it’s about looking after yourself first sometimes. (http://www.themummysomniac.com/blog/the-airplane-analogy)
Kids are always a huge motivation in life, aside from your child/children what has been your biggest motivation to achieve success
Prior to having my kids I would have said that my motivations would have been to prove to other people that I can do it. Now, that’s definitely changed. I would say that it’s to prove to MYSELF that I can do it. It’s about fulfilling ME. And I think having my kids definitely changed that way of thinking.
There is so much information out there about business, what are some points you live y with your brand?
I guess my brand as a blogger/writer is me. So being authentic is absolutely the most important thing. I think also, being honest with myself in regards to what it is exactly that I want to achieve here. It’s so easy to lose sight of what you’re really doing when there’s money or ‘fame’ involved.
What practical tips could you give to our mums out there who are thinking of turning a passion into a plan?
Just do it. Don’t let yourself over think things. Write down your thoughts and ideas. Especially those ones that come to you in the middle of the night. Those ones are usually the best ones. Write them down so that you can come back to them when you’re thinking a little more clearly. It’s the same as in parenting, trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, or you feel uncomfortable, take a step back and assess why. There’s usually a pretty good reason.
What is the most rewarding thing for you in what you do?
Receiving messages of support from people. Women that have read a piece of mine, and it’s really resonated with them, or helped them in some way. I write my pieces for myself mostly, but to know that there are others out there feeling the same things that I am, or having experienced the same, really encourages me to continue.
